Effective Sex Education

Right here.

Another possibly confusing interpretation: it's okay to hop in the sack once engagement rings are exchanged?

To-Do & Fun Facts

1. Languages I'd be interested to learn:

Ojibwe
Frisian
Tamil
Michif
Mednyj-Aleut
Fula
Fly Taal
Cocoliche
Makah
Ngan'gityemerri

2. Fun Facts from John McWhorter's The Power of Babel:

"...a mere one percent of the words in English today are not borrowed from other languages."

The word hussy derives from housewife.

"...America is rather exceptionally bland in regard to dialect divergence...."

"Despite the guilty intuition one might have that 'primitive' hunter-gatherers would speak 'simpler' languages, in fact, it is among such groups that languages are likely to be the most elaborated."

"...generation after generation are taught that the 'real' language is that variety enshrined on the page and that the changes taking place in their speech are 'mistakes' rather than natural developments of the very sort that turned Latin into French...."

"By one reasonable estimate, ninety percent of the world's languages will be dead by 2100...."

Microserfs post-game

A couple quotes I want to keep track of from Douglas Coupland's Microserfs, which I just finished:

"I got to feeling meditative. I felt as though my inner self was much closer to the surface than it usually gets. It's a nice feeling. It takes quiet to get there." (p. 137)

"We then got into a discussion of Nerd Schools... -- and of course this led to a listing of schools that had the best nerd reputations.
[...]
-Brown -- 'Hipster nerd school with a good undergrad comp-sci program.'" (p. 326-7)

And now onto Breakfast of Champions, of which I am now the proud owner of my very own copy thanks to the mangling of checked-baggage handling (it was a pristine-condition borrowed copy...).

The Saga Continues

1. Not really much I didn't already know here, but interesting all the same.

2. Yes, the Herald prints opinions that it doesn't necessarily agree with. But they only print those that are so outrageous that no one takes them seriously.

Stewie's Sexy Party

Apparently Brown University should be ashamed for allowing (and partially funding) orgies on campus.

College students wearing provocative clothing and dancing? Drinking, even? Possibly...having sex??!!!1/11/

Surely not!

More Bible Quotes They Didn't Teach In Sunday School

All of which were pointed out in Ben Edward Akerley's The X-Rated Bible.

Genesis 38:9 ...it came to pass, when he went in unto his brother's wife, that he spilled it on the ground....

Maybe the kiddies will read that and think the "it" is a glass of apple juice?

Psalms 38:7 For my loins are filled with a loathsome disease....

No comment here.

Genesis 19:8 Behold now, I have two daughters which have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes....

Judges 19:24 Behold, here is my daughter a maiden, and his concubine; them I will bring out now, and humble ye them, and do with them what seemeth good unto you....

Lovely times they lived in -- adherence to a strict code of hospitality was worth offering one's own daughters up for rape.

Judges 19:25 ...the man took his concubine, and brought her forth unto them; and they knew her, and abused her all the night until the morning....

The obligatory rape and torture scene.

II Samuel 12:11 Thus saith the Lord...I will take thy wives before thine eyes, and give them unto thy neighbor, and he shall lie with thy wives in the sight of this sun.

Apparently wife-swapping is okay if God organizes it.

Proverbs 23:27 For a whore is a deep ditch; and a strange woman is a narrow pit.

I find it difficult to believe that whoever actually wrote that didn't realize how unfortunate those metaphors are.

I Samuel 2:22 ...they lay with the women that assembled at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.

Prostitutes hanging out in front of the church, all right!

Genesis 18:12 ...Sarah laughed within herself, saying, After I am waxed old shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also?

Insert plug for Viagra.

Joshua 5:3 And Joshua made him sharp knives, and circumcised the children of Israel at the hill of the foreskins.

I wonder if Biblical archaeologists have found the remains of the Hill. Probably not. Foreskins biodegrade pretty fast.

I Samuel 18:25 ...The king desireth not any dowry, but a hundred foreskins of the Philistines....

I guess some guys really dig foreskins.

Proverbs 5:18-19 ...rejoice with the wife of thy youth...let her breasts satisfy thee at all times; and be thou ravished always with her love.

I thought we were supposed to be guilty about sex.

Malachi 2:3 Behold, I will corrupt your seed, and spread dung upon your faces....

God apparently hadn't progressed beyond the anal stage when this was transcribed.

Exodus 33:23 ...I will take away mine hand, and thou shalt see my back parts....

See above.

Isaiah 16:11 Wherefore my bowels shall sound like a harp for Moab, and mine inward parts for Kir-ha'resh.

See above.

Deuteronomy 23:1 He that is wounded in the stones, or hath his privy member cut off, shall not enter into the congregation of the Lord.

Got that, eunuchs? You're not allowed in the club.

Song of Solomon 4:5-6 Thy two breasts are like two young roes that are twins, which feed among the lilies. Until the day break, and the shadows flee away, I will get me to the mountain of myrrh, and to the hill of frankincense.

Again, I thought we weren't supposed to rejoice in lowly matters of the flesh.

And finally...Ephesians 5:12 For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret.

So why are sex and matters of sexuality discussed so frequently in the Bible itself? Perhaps an extreme case of do as I say, not as I do.

Holy. Fucking. Shit.

From the leading abstinence-only curriculum's website:

True realism demands we recognize that the sexual revolution has proved to be a disaster for American society. Congress has done just that, calling for a paradigm shift in the best medical, emotional and economic interest of America. In this it is following a distinguished precedent: Congress has taken similar bold action before in our history—for example, on drugs, racial equality and smoking. It is unfortunate that some people cannot accept the courageous act of Congress and are attempting to sabotage the law.

The sexual revolution proved to be a disaster for American society??? I'm sorry to tell you, lady, but STDs and divorce would've found their way to this country with or without hippies and free love. Humans like sex. They're always going to seek it out, with or without your permission.

And, we're comparing the push for abstinence-only education to the struggle for Civil Rights???!!1!!1!

Yet again, aren't conservatives supposed to dislike government interference in our personal lives? "Congress has done just that, calling for a paradigm shift in the best medical, emotional and economic interest of America." She said it, not me.

Something else that bothers me:

What do I tell my 10 year old daughter about womanhood?

The Six Ms for pre-puberty girls:

[...]

4. Mary, our model of meekness: The Blessed Virgin Mary is a role model for women. She was not aggressive, obnoxious or gossipy. Remind your daughter that she will see many girls become louder and more immature when they physically develop if they do not know that a girl has to work spiritually to become virtuous. Meekness is inner strength without impulsiveness. Look to Mary, your heavenly mother, for guidance.

And this program, with its blatant religious message and underpinnings, receives FEDERAL FUNDING to be implemented in public schools. I know this is old news, but still....

TMI?

Today I bring you a brief quote from the Bible:

For she doted upon their paramours, whose flesh is as the flesh of asses, and whose issue is like the issue of horses. (Ezekiel 23:20)

Now translate the euphemisms "flesh" and "issue" into "genitals" and "ejaculate" (or whatever slang term you prefer).

The passage this came from was obviously trying to say that it's bad for a woman to lust after and/or seek and enjoy sex with men. I dare say the message would have gotten across without going into such loving detail about these particular lust-worthy men.

There's an eight or nine-year-old girl at school who's reading the Bible as a take-home reading assignment. I wonder if her parents know it contains erotica.
